Leaking or running toilets, taps and fixtures

Burst, leaking or corroded water pipes

Everyday plumbing problems and what we do about them
Customers usually describe the symptom, not the part that has failed. Here is how common problems usually show up, what we check, and when a repair is enough or a replacement makes more sense.
Dripping or leaking taps
A tap that drips, a handle that is stiff or loose, or water seeping around the base is usually a worn washer, cartridge or seat. If the tap body is sound, we repair it. If the body is corroded, parts are no longer available or you would like a new look, we replace the tap or mixer.
Running or constantly filling toilets
Water trickling into the pan, a cistern that refills by itself or a hissing sound after flushing is commonly a worn inlet valve, a flush valve seal or a float that no longer shuts off. We replace the failed parts. If the cistern is cracked or leaking from the tank itself, replacing the cistern or the whole toilet suite is the better fix, and we install new suites too.
Leaks at the base of a toilet
Water around the base of a toilet can come from the pan connector, the cistern connection or a worn seal. We find where it is coming from before replacing anything. Example: a leaking toilet pan connector replaced in Endeavour Hills.
Leaking basins, sinks and vanities
Damp or stained cupboards under a basin, kitchen sink or laundry trough usually point to a loose or worn trap, waste fitting, flexible tap hose or tap connection. We repair or replace the fitting that is leaking and check the surrounding cabinet and wall for water damage.
Shower leaks and shower plumbing repairs
Damp patches on the wall or ceiling near a shower, or a mixer that leaks inside the wall, can come from the shower mixer, wall connections, outlet pipework or the waste. We check the plumbing side of the problem. If the cause turns out to be outside plumbing, such as tiling or waterproofing, we will say so.
Burst and leaking water pipes
A sudden wet patch, a spinning water meter with everything off, or a drop in pressure can mean a pipe has failed. Where one section has failed we repair that section. Where pipe is corroded along its length, replacing the run is usually more sensible than repeating small repairs. Example: a corroded galvanised water line replaced in Wantirna.
Water main repairs and replacements
The water main is the supply pipe that runs from the meter to your home. We repair leaks in it, and replace it where it has corroded or keeps failing. This covers private property water services, including underground supply lines, on your side of the water meter; we do not carry out work on water authority-owned infrastructure. Water pressure problems and pressure limiting valves
Low pressure can come from blocked tap strainers, partly closed valves, corroded pipework or a supply problem. Unusually high pressure can stress taps, toilets and hot water systems. We test pressure on site, and install or replace a pressure limiting valve (PLV) where one is needed to protect your fixtures.
Hot and cold water pipework repairs and renewals
Ageing galvanised pipe, failed joints and old fittings can cause leaks, brown water and weak flow. We repair individual faults and renew pipework where repair would only be a short-term fix.
Rainwater tank, pump and recycled water plumbing
We carry out plumbing connections and repairs for rainwater tanks and pumps, and repair recycled water pipes. Recycled water pipework has to be kept separate from drinking water, and we explain this on site where it applies. Example: a hidden recycled water leak found and repaired in Clyde.

If you are not sure what is wrong, or want a plumbing check before buying, selling or renovating, we inspect the property, test the system and explain what we find in plain language.
Repair or replace? If a part has worn out and the rest of the fixture is sound, repair is usually the right call. Replacement makes sense when the fixture body is cracked or corroded, parts are no longer available, or the same fault keeps coming back. We tell you which applies after inspecting it, and you approve the price before work starts.

Why is my toilet constantly running or refilling?
A toilet that keeps running usually has a worn inlet valve, a flush valve that is not sealing, or a float set too high. These are normally repairable on site. If the cistern itself is cracked or leaking, a replacement cistern or toilet suite is the better option.
Can you repair a leaking tap, or does it need replacing?
Most dripping taps can be repaired by replacing the washer, cartridge or seat. If the tap body is corroded or parts are unavailable, replacing the tap or mixer is more reliable. We check first and explain both options.
Do you work on rainwater tanks, pumps and recycled water pipes?
Yes. We carry out plumbing for rainwater tank connections and pumps, and repair recycled water pipework. Call or text with what you have and we will arrange an on-site inspection.
What is a pressure limiting valve and do I need one?
A pressure limiting valve (PLV) reduces high mains pressure before it reaches your taps, toilets and hot water system. If your pressure is very high, or fixtures are failing early, we can test the pressure and advise whether one should be installed or replaced.
