When a sewer repair is needed
A blockage does not automatically mean replacement. A repair or renewal is worth considering when:
- the same sewer blocks repeatedly after being cleared
- a camera shows damaged or displaced joints, or roots entering the pipe
- a section of pipe has cracked or collapsed
- an inspection shows old pipe, poor fall or a layout that collects material
If you simply have a blocked drain that needs clearing, see blocked drains.
Investigation comes first
We use a CCTV drain camera where the pipe is accessible, and locate the line from above ground so the defect and its depth are known before the repair is planned. That lets the work be scoped around the actual problem rather than guesswork. See CCTV drain inspections for what a camera can and can't show.
Repair or renewal?
Targeted section repair
Suited to a damaged section, a failed joint or a single root-entry point where the rest of the line is sound. Only the affected section is exposed and replaced.
Renewal or replacement
Suited to pipe that has deteriorated along its length, repeated root entry along the run, or a layout and fall that cause repeat blockages. Excavation, access and reinstatement are discussed before you approve the work.
What determines the quote: the length and depth of pipe, how easily it can be reached, the pipe material and what has to be reinstated afterwards.
Sewer work we've done
These jobs are published on our Recent Work page. They show the type of work we do — the locations are where the jobs were, not a list of where we're based.
Sewer line renewal — Somerville
Problem: Old sewer line prone to recurring blockages.
What we found: Poorly configured drainage, excessive changes of direction and sections with inadequate fall.
What we did: Renewed 40m of old sewer line with new 100mm PVC pipe on a straight, direct alignment with the required fall.
See the full job →Terracotta sewer replaced & boundary trap renewed — Edithvale
Problem: Recurring sewer blockage.
What we found: Old, deteriorated terracotta sewer pipe and a failed boundary trap.
What we did: Replaced 12 metres of sewer pipe and installed a new boundary trap. The completed drainage works were inspected and passed by the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) before backfilling.
See the full job →Our published Berwick work includes a CCTV inspection that identified significant tree-root intrusion in a sewer line. The blockage was cleared, the affected section was located from above ground, and the customer was advised on rectification options.
Restoring flow and repairing defective pipework are different steps. We explain what the inspection shows and discuss the appropriate work for the affected section.
A different drainage system: in Berwick we removed a root-filled 90mm stormwater pipe and replaced the affected section — see the job.
What the job scope should cover
Before work starts you'll know which section is affected, how it will be accessed, how the new pipe is tested and what reinstatement is included. Where an inspection applies to the work, it is arranged before the trench is backfilled. Any change to the scope is approved before we proceed.
Coverage & booking
We're based in Clyde and work across south-east and eastern Melbourne — see our service areas. Local pages with sewer and drainage detail include Berwick and Wantirna South. Call or text with your suburb and job details. Planned on-site quotes are free; any applicable attendance or diagnostic fee will be explained before the booking is arranged. For an urgent blockage, see blocked drains and emergency attendance.
What the work involves
Sewer excavations, boundary shaft and lead-off repairs
Sewer work is about finding the exact defect first. These are the main types of sewer and stormwater repair we are asked about.
Broken, cracked and collapsed sewer pipes
Cracked, displaced or collapsed sections are a common reason a sewer keeps blocking. A CCTV inspection shows where the defect is and how far it extends, so the repair can be scoped properly. Example: a broken sewer bend found beneath a root blockage in Wantirna.
Sewer excavations
When a defect has to be repaired or a pipe replaced, we excavate down to the sewer, carry out the repair or replacement and reinstate the area. We locate the defect first so excavation is limited to what is needed. Examples: sewer line renewal in Somerville and terracotta sewer replaced in Edithvale.
Boundary shaft and lead-off repairs
The boundary shaft is the inspection point near the property boundary, and the lead-off is the section that connects your drain to the sewer. Damage here can cause repeat blockages. Work near the connection point may involve the water authority, and we explain what is required before starting.
Sewer repairs and renewals
Where a pipe has deteriorated along its length, renewing a section or the full run can be a better long-term outcome than repeated clearing or small patch repairs.
Stormwater drainage repairs and renewals
Broken or root-filled stormwater pipes cause pooling and flooding. We repair or replace damaged sections after inspecting the line. Example: a root-filled stormwater pipe replaced in Berwick.
What to expect. We inspect, locate the defect, explain what we found and the options, and agree the scope and price before digging starts. Call or text to book an on-site assessment.
More questions we are asked
What is a boundary shaft and why does it matter?
The boundary shaft is an inspection point near your property boundary where your drain meets the line to the sewer. Defects at or near this point can cause repeat blockages, so we inspect it as part of any sewer investigation.
How do you decide what a sewer or lead-off repair involves?
The work depends on where the defect is, how your drain connects to the sewer and the relevant water authority's requirements. We explain responsibility and approvals before work begins, and a camera inspection shows where the defect is.
Sewer repair FAQs
Why does my sewer keep blocking after it's been cleared?
Clearing removes the blockage but not the cause. Tree roots entering a cracked pipe or failed joint, a collapsed section, or poor fall can cause the same blockage to return. A CCTV inspection shows which it is, so the right fix can be chosen.
How do you decide between a repair and a replacement?
We look at the pipe with a camera and locate the defect. If one section is damaged and the rest is sound, a targeted repair may be enough. If the pipe has deteriorated along its length, or its layout and fall cause repeat blockages, renewal is usually the better long-term fix. Not every blockage needs replacement.
What affects the cost of a sewer repair?
The length of pipe affected, its depth, how easily it can be accessed, the pipe material and what has to be reinstated afterwards. We quote after inspecting the job on site, and the scope and price are agreed before work starts.
Will you dig up my garden or concrete?
Fixing a buried sewer usually involves excavation. We locate the defect first so digging can be limited to the section that needs work, and we explain what will be disturbed and reinstated before you approve the job.
